HX Expeditions in Hobart

A Special Antarctic Evening with HX Expeditions in Hobart

Join two leading Antarctic experts for an engaging night of science, exploration, and insight (tickets are complimentary) into one of the world’s most extraordinary destinations.

For Compass Society members fascinated by Antarctica — its science, its fragility, and its enduring power to inspire — a special evening is coming to Hobart this February.

HX Expeditions (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) invite guests to an engaging night of conversation and insight at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS), recognised as a centre of excellence for marine and Antarctic research, leading ground-breaking studies across scientific and social science boundaries.

Hosted within the IMAS Ice Core Laboratory, this complimentary event brings together expedition travel, polar science, and sustainability — offering a rare opportunity to hear directly from two of HX’s most experienced Antarctic voices.

Event details

An evening of Antarctic insight

HX has a long-standing connection with Antarctica and polar exploration, combining expedition travel with a strong commitment to science, education, and environmental responsibility. Their partnership with the University of Tasmania and IMAS reflects a shared goal: helping travellers better understand the places they visit, and the global importance of protecting them.

This evening offers a behind-the-scenes look at how modern Antarctic expeditions operate — not just as voyages of discovery, but as platforms for real-world research and learning.

Why Antarctica – and why now

According to Virtuoso’s 2026 Luxe Report, Antarctica is emerging as one of the most compelling destinations for Australian travellers right now. Drawing on insights from hundreds of Aussie and Kiwi luxury travel advisors, the report identifies Antarctica as a standout Top 10 destination, coming in at number one for three of the 2026 lists — “on the rise”, “adventure travel” and “cruising”, while expedition cruising is in the top 3 for “most popular solo travel experiences”.

This reflects a growing appetite for expedition cruising, immersive experiences, and places that feel truly untouched.

With Australians travelling for longer, planning further ahead, and increasingly seeking meaningful journeys that combine adventure, learning, and comfort, Antarctica has moved firmly into the spotlight — not just as a once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list destination, but as a truly defining travel experience.
