Douglas Mawson Inaugural Voyage

Last month, Cathi joined the inaugural voyage of the Douglas Mawson, sailing on the ship's very first expedition around Tasmania.

Last month, a striking new silhouette appeared on the River Derwent, catching the attention of many in Hobart — the Douglas Mawson, one of the newest additions to the fleet of Aurora Expeditions.

Aboard the Douglas Mawson: First Voyage Around Tasmania

Cathi had the opportunity to do far more than simply inspect this new expedition ship alongside the wharf in Hobart — she joined the inaugural voyage of the Douglas Mawson, sailing on the ship’s very first expedition around Tasmania.

Operated by Aurora Expeditions, the Douglas Mawson is a next-generation X-Class expedition ship, purpose-built for immersive exploration in some of the world’s most remote regions. This maiden journey, Coastal Tasmania: Untamed Wildness, marked the ship’s first official expedition and offered a fitting introduction to her capabilities.

Over 11 days, the voyage circumnavigated Tasmania, combining Zodiac landings, ship-based cruising, wildlife encounters and time ashore at some of the island’s most dramatic and historically rich locations — including Bruny Island, the Tasman Peninsula, Flinders Island, Maria Island and Port Arthur. It was a true expedition-style journey, designed to showcase both Tasmania’s wild coastline and the ship’s ability to operate comfortably and safely in varied conditions.

Experiencing the Ship at Sea

Being onboard for a full expedition allowed Cathi to experience the Douglas Mawson as it was designed to be used — not just the public spaces and cabins, but the rhythm of life at sea, expedition briefings, Zodiac operations, lectures, and daily recaps from the expedition team.

This first-hand experience is always invaluable. It provides insights into how the ship handles different sea states, how passengers move through the vessel during busy expedition days, and how the design supports both comfort and adventure — knowledge that can’t be gained from brochures or deck plans alone.

The X-Bow Advantage

One of the most distinctive features of the Douglas Mawson is her X-Bow® design, a forward hull shape originally developed for offshore and polar conditions. Unlike traditional bows that ride over waves, the X-Bow is engineered to cut through them.

For passengers, this translates into:

  • Reduced pitching and slamming in rougher seas
  • A smoother, more stable ride
  • Improved comfort during longer passages
  • Less vibration and noise in forward areas of the ship

During the Tasmanian circumnavigation — which included open-water sailing and exposed coastal cruising — the benefits of this design were clearly felt, contributing to a calmer and more comfortable onboard experience.

Why First-Hand Experience Matters

Sailing on the Douglas Mawson’s first expedition means Cathi can add to her extensive cruising experience and speak with genuine, lived experience about what this ship is really like. From expedition pacing and onboard atmosphere to the balance between exploration and comfort, these insights help ensure recommendations are thoughtful, realistic and tailored to each traveller.

Whether clients are considering a Discovery-style voyage closer to home, or a more adventurous expedition cruise to polar regions, having first-hand knowledge of the ship, crew and expedition style makes all the difference.
